kitchen backsplash

I got some additional small porcelain tiles from Lowe's and put them up around the granite countertop in the kitchen. They match the floor tile. I bought a scattering of decorative tiles, too.

I used a slightly lighter grout color for the backsplash. Total cost of the tiles was about $90 including the grout and caulk. I had the adhesive left over from other jobs.

The granite company wanted $1200 more for the granite backsplash that matched the countertop.

Election Day

Okay, today I voted and hope things will turn out well for this country.

I voted for Obama. No long lines as were predicted, but it is starting to rain a bit.

New Doors. . .

OK. Now it's a bunch of new doors in the upstairs hall. Ialready replaced the one to the hall bathroom and the others are looking especially daek and out of date. I went to the local Home Depot and got a couple 30 inch wide, 78 inch tall door blanks and installed them. I bought new privacy locks in brushed stainless, too.

I installed the two new doors and that makes three so far. Looks like the next two will be a little tougher. The door blanks are exactly 30" and that's too tight a squeeze in the old frame. I'm going to have to find some way to push out the frame or replace the entire frame and door.

There is also the matter of one closet door and the master bathroom door. They will have to be done later. A trip to IN comes first. Gotta get more face time with Sabine and play with Bella. More pictures for the blog!!

tagged

Okay, I got "Tagged" by Cara. I am supposed to write six unimportant/trivial/odd things about myself. I'm not sure anyone will argue with me so I'll stretch the truth a little.

1. I once ate a woodpecker. I was hungry. I hadn't eaten for three days. This happened in a Navy survival school in Warner Springs, CA.

2. I have fascinated women with my sensuous trombone playing, making several of them swoon. I have piloted bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

3. I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst and a ruthless taskmaster. Critics worldwide rave about my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail.

4. I have been caller number nine and won the weekend to Toronto where I appeared in Phantom. During the summer, I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I batted .400. My deft floral arrangements earned me awards in the international botany circles. Children trust me.

5. I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. Last February, I read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I learned the location of Jimmy Hoffa's body.

6. I have balanced, woven, dodged & frolicked and my bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, I participated in full-contact origami. I discovered the meaning of life. I made extraordinary four course meals with only a spatula and a toaster oven. I was successful in the breeding of prize-winning clams. I won a bullfight in San Juan, the cliff diving competition in Sri Lanka, and a spelling bee at the Kremlin. I also played Hamlet on Broadway, performed open-heart surgery and spoke to Elvis.

I’m not sure this is what you wanted, but I made the effort.

This is the final result. I know what went into this project and can tell you I couldn't have done it without help from my friends. . . .

kitchen destruction/demolition

Now here are a couple pictures of the kitchen in the heat of battle. First, the destruction!!

So I'm back again. I have to give the complete info on the kitchen.

Here is what it looked like on June 3, 2007

Here's another view. . . .

And the far side with the closet. . . .

Finished Bathroom

Okay, now the bathroom is finished and it looks as if the next big project will be the kitchen. That will happen in the late spring or early summer of 2007.

The bathroom took almost 11 months. We did go with a light green wall and the rest is white with a light gray floor tile. The maroon towels and rugs are a nice contrast.

The main idea is that nothing leaks and the place is insulated and clean.

Latest bathroom progress

Okay, I'm remiss.

Here's a picture of the bathroom taken a week or so ago.

More spackling and sanding to do and another coat of primer. The tub surround is on order and the linen closet needs to be built.

We haven't picked out a color for the walls yet, but that will be a one day job. . . . I hope.
